How Far?
Five pairs of cities from across the country. Guess the straight-line distance in kilometres and score on how close you get. Being out by a little on a long trip still scores well; being out by a lot on a short one does not.
How far apart are they, in a straight line?
Straight-line distance, not driving distance — the driving route is always longer, sometimes by hundreds of kilometres.

Winnipeg in this puzzle
Edmonton is the closest of the ten cities these games cover, measured in a straight line from Winnipeg.
St. John's is the most distant — effectively the other end of the country.
How to play
- You are given two Canadian cities and their provinces.
- Enter your guess for the straight-line distance in kilometres.
- Scoring is logarithmic, so it rewards proportional accuracy rather than raw kilometres.
- The real distance and the great-circle route are shown after each guess.
What this puzzle is built from
City coordinates from the same table the site uses for sunrise, sunset and local time. Distances are great-circle distances computed with the haversine formula — the shortest path over the globe, not driving distance, which is always longer.
Privacy
There is no account and no leaderboard. Your streak, your best score and your recent results are stored in this browser’s local storage and are never transmitted. Clearing your browsing data clears them, and playing in a private window will not remember anything.
